Homework

Reading: Your child will bring a reading book home from the School Library to read regularly (at least 5 times a week) at home. Please encourage your child to complete their reading diary to show when they have read.

On a Friday, your child will bring home a 60-second reading comprehension sheet to complete for the following Monday.

Spelling: On a Tuesday, your child will receive a Look Say Cover Write Check sheet to complete at home with 10 spellings. The spellings will also appear on this class page on the school website each week. These spellings are based on the National Curriculum and linked to the words, patterns or rules we will cover in class.

The children will be tested on these words on Friday.

Maths: The children will receive a sheet, with questions to complete at home, based on their learning in class during that week. This will be sent home on a Friday to be handed in on the following Thursday.

The children can continue to practise times tables using Times Tables Rockstars at home. They will have a times tables test every Friday revisiting previously learnt times tables which will involve both multiplications and divisions.

Our Topics

Autumn - Dynamic Dynasties

This project teaches you about the history of ancient China, focusing primarily on the Shang Dynasty, and explores the lasting legacy of the first five Chinese dynasties, some of which can still be seen in the world today. You will also learn about our Solar System and its spherical celestial bodies. We will describe the movements of the Earth and the other planets relative to the Sun, the Moon relative to Earth, and the Earth's rotation to explain day and night. In Geography you will learn about the Prime Meridian, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), and worldwide time zones and study interconnected climate zones, vegetation belts and biomes. Children learn about human geography and capital cities worldwide before looking at the UK motorway network and settlements.

Spring - Sow, Grow & Farm

In the Sow, Grow and Farm project, you will learn about allotments in the United Kingdom and how the government encouraged people to have them to support food rationing during the Second World War. You will learn about food webs and animal life cycles, including how living things are dependent on one another within a habitat. You will investigate the different ways that plants reproduce and will dissect flowering plants to identify the different structures. You will have the opportunity to learn about farming in the United Kingdom and the techniques used in modern farming, including the challenges that farmers face. You will learn about the benefits of eating seasonally and about the pros and cons of importing food. You will also learn about world farming and how the different climate zones affect where different foods can be grown.

Summer - Groundbreaking Greeks

In the Groundbreaking Greeks project, you will learn about different periods of Greek history, exploring the earliest civilisations, the devastation of the Dark Age and the breakthroughs and developments of the Archaic and Classical periods. You will understand how the geography of Greece affected the development of city states and explore Athens, learning about the structure of the government and society. You will get to know some of the most significant Athenians and understand why Greek art, culture, architecture, philosophy, medicine and mathematics were so significant. You will learn about the leadership of Alexander the Great and discover how Ancient Greece became part of the Roman Empire after the Hellenistic period. You will explore how the Romans respected and developed Greek ideas, making them their own and spreading them throughout the Roman Empire. To end the project, you will decide which was the ancient Greeks' greatest idea, and explore how the legacy of Ancient Greece affects their lives today.
