A BIG WELCOME TO OUR NEW BUSY BEES CLASS OF 2026 - 2027!

Term 1: Let's Explore  
Children will explore their immediate classroom environment and the Bassingham school grounds to help them feel safe, secure, and settled. They will learn about our local rural environment, share experiences of places they have visited, and begin looking at and creating simple journey maps.

Supporting your child at home

• Talk about school spaces: Ask your child to describe their new classroom or where they played on the Bassingham School grounds to help them process their day and feel secure.
• Explore your local area: Take short walks around your local rural environment to notice features like trees, fields, or signs, helping them connect their home community to school.
• Share past holiday memories: Look at family photos together from recent trips or visits, encouraging your child to talk about the different places they have experienced.
• Draw simple journey maps: Create a fun, basic map of a familiar routine, such as the route from your kitchen to the bedroom or the short walk to school.
• Play 'What's Next?' games: Practise simple sequencing during walks or daily routines by asking what landmark or step comes next, which builds early mapping and geography skills.

Maths:

In the first half of the Autumn term, children will follow Phase 1, "Getting to Know You," and progress onto Phase 2, focusing on "Match, Sort and Compare" alongside "It’s Me 1 2 3!". These blocks lay the foundation for early mathematical understanding by helping children match identical objects or pictures, define distinct sets, and explore varied sorting techniques. Pupils will learn to create their own sorting rules and compare total amounts through practical, play-based activities. Alongside this, they will find, subitise, represent, and explore the composition of numbers 1, 2, and 3, including finding 1 more and 1 less. They will also be introduced to key vocabulary linked to circles, triangles, environmental shapes, and spatial position.

RWI
The children are now divided into 4 groups for RWI. They will be taught by Mrs McClymont, Mrs Markham, Mrs Duckitt or Miss DeMooij . Please ensure you are watching the RWI videos each week and either practising the sounds in the green books or reading the Story Books. You will continue to receive your weekly e-mail with the sounds your child has learnt that week.

Each half term we have our Super 6 books and Super 6 rhymes. These are books and rhymes we become really familiar with and focus on vocabulary.

School Values Focus: Kindness

This term, we will be going on weekly walks around our local area, visiting the park, shop, pub, church, post office, and the river to discuss water safety. These walks will provide real-life experiences to help the children discuss their community and develop their local knowledge.

A few reminders...

Monday

- Forest School. Please ensure the children are prepared for the autumn weather. They MUST wear long sleeve tops and trousers. No t-shirts or shorts please. This is for health and safety reasons.  All children must wear trainers and bring along a pair of wellies for wet days. No open toe shoes or Crocs please.  

Tuesday

- PE day. Please come to school in School PE kit and trainers. 

Wednesday

- Please return your Reading for Pleasure book on a Wednesday. The children will be issued with a new Reading for Pleasure book for the week. This is for you to read and share with your child. Once we have assessed phonics in a few weeks we will send home soundbooks. 

- You will receive Read Write Inc Virtual Classrooms videos to practise their sounds at home. Please try to access all the videos during the week. 

What to bring

- Water bottle

- Reading folder

- Fruit snack in a labelled tub (If you want to. We provide fruit everyday)

- Warm water proof coat

Please make sure all jumpers and cardigans are labelled.
